Density profile peaking in JET H-mode plasmas: experiments versus linear gyrokinetic predictions

چکیده
As an independent complement to previous studies (Weisen et al 2005 Nucl. Fusion 45 L1–4, Weisen et al 2006 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 48 A457–66, Angioni et al 2007 Nucl. Fusion 47 1326–35), density peaking in the JET tokamak was investigated on the dataset, comprising virtually all H-mode experiments performed in 2006–2007. Unlike previous studies, this work focuses on low collisionality data as most representative of reactor conditions. The study confirms that collisionality is the most important parameter governing density peaking in H-mode, followed by the NBI particle flux and/or the Ti/Te temperature ratio. For the first time in JET a modest, albeit significant dependence of peaking on internal inductance, or magnetic shear is seen. The experimental behaviour is compared with an extensive database of linear gyrokinetic calculations using the GS2 code. The predictions from GS2 simulations based on the highest linear growth rate mode are in good agreement with experimental observations. They are also corroborated by initial results from the non-linear code GYRO. PACS numbers: 52.55.Fa, 52.65.Tt, 52.25.Fi (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version)

Density profile behavior in JET H-mode plasmas
The degree of peaking of the density profile has profound implications for reactor operation. As an independent complement to previous studies, density peaking in the JET tokamak was investigated on the most recent dataset, comprising virtually all experiments performed in 2006 and 2007. Unlike previous studies, this work focuses on low collisionality data as most representative of reactor cond...
متن کاملGyrokinetic Simulation of Tokamak Edge Plasmas
It has been recently discovered that the trapped electron mode (TEM) may play an important role in the H mode edge plasma for domestic tokamaks such as EAST and HL-2A. The stability and transport for TEM for the edge parameters are studied using large scale gyrokinetic particle simulations. The gyrokinetic simulation reveals the parametric dependences on the wavelength and collisionality. The b...

In this paper we show that changing from an ion temperature gradient (ITG) to trapped electron mode (TEM) dominant turbulence regime (based on linear gyrokinetic simulations) results experimentally in a strong density pump-out in low collisionality, low power H-mode plasmas. We vary the turbulence drive by changing the heating from pre-dominantly ion heated using neutral beam injection Particle...

متن کاملReduced Electron Thermal Transport in Low Collisionality H-mode Plasmas in DIII-D and the Importance of Small-scale Turbulence
The first systematic investigation of core electron thermal transport and the role of local ion temperature gradient/trapped electron mode/electron temperature gradient (ITG/TEM/ETG)-scale core turbulence is performed in high temperature, low collisionality DIII-D H-mode plasmas. Taking advantage of the unique set of DIII-D turbulence and profile diagnostics, experimentally determined L-mode an...
